Alice Bailey was born in Manchester,
England on June 16th, 1880. Her early years were not happy ones
leading her to attempt suicide three times before reaching fifteen
years of age. The basis of her deep feelings of unworthiness she
later attributed to the influence of her strong Christian unbringing.
In Alices' 'Unfinished Autobiography' (published
by The Lucis Trust in 1951) she describes how one day, whilst
her family were away at church, a man wearing a turban suddenly
entered her room and spoke to her. He explained that she was in
fact destined for great spiritual things to come should she choose
to re-orientate herself away from her life of personal concerns.
Alice was fifteen at the time and the impact upon her of such
a visitation must have been immense.
The Secret Chiefs
This event started Alice off on a spiritual journey
that placed her high up with many of the leading occultists of her age.
Her contact returned every seven years and became known to her as DK,
or Djwhal Khul. He is generally accepted to have been one of the 'Ascended
Masters' or 'Secret Chiefs' - highly-developed, inner-plane guides who
are known to appear sporadically to initiates whenever specific teachings
need to be revealed to humanity.
Between 1919 and her death in 1949 Alice Bailey
produced twenty-four books on the occult sciences. These cover a wide
range to subjects and to this day remain some of the most popular and
errudite spiritual teachings of the past century.
